Frequently asked questions
What does the Champion Esox Lucius colour represent?
Esox Lucius resembles a small pike. It has olive-green flanks, pale spots and a dark back. Pike also eat smaller fish of their own species, so this pattern reflects fish they may encounter in their water. The colour alone does not determine why a pike will strike, though.
When is Esox Lucius worth putting on?
Reach for it in clear or lightly stained water when you want to fish a natural colour. It is also worth trying on a heavily fished lake, especially when fish only follow bright lures. After changing the colour, try gentler movements and short pauses.
Is Esox Lucius suitable for Swedish archipelagos?
Yes, it is worth taking for clear archipelago bays and Swedish lakes. It will also be useful on similar waters in Finland. You do not have to travel to Scandinavia to use it, though: you can also try a natural pike colour on a clear lake in Poland.
How do I retrieve Esox Lucius when pike are reluctant to bite?
Start with short, gentle movements and give the lure a brief pause between them. If a pike follows, try speeding up. Over vegetation, watch the pause length so Champion does not sink into snags. In deeper water, you can let it drop lower.
Is Esox Lucius a colour only for big pike?
No. A small-pike pattern does not mean the lure is intended only for the biggest fish. The 12 cm size is worth trying when you want to fish a smaller jerkbait. You can reach for 15 or 17 cm when pike are hunting bigger fish and you have suitably strong tackle.
What kind of lure is Champion, and where is it worth fishing?
Champion is a sinking glider jerkbait. It glides from side to side on the retrieve, and you can change its action with rod movements or retrieve speed. It is worth fishing in bays, around reeds, along vegetation and over drop-offs. The key is to give it enough room to work.
Which Champion size should I choose: 12, 15 or 17 cm?
Champion 12 cm weighs 45 g, 15 cm weighs 80 g and 17 cm weighs 120 g. Choose the smaller model when you want to fish a smaller lure. The largest is worth trying when pike are feeding on bigger fish. Each size needs a suitable rod and a leader that can withstand pike teeth.
How do I retrieve the Champion jerkbait?
Start with short rod twitches or bursts of speed with the reel handle. Alternate these with pauses and watch the lure's action. You can also fish Champion without constantly jerking the rod. When pike respond poorly, slow down. If they strike decisively, try a faster retrieve and more frequent changes of pace.
Can I fish Champion over vegetation?
Yes, if there is enough open water between the vegetation and the surface. Champion sinks, so it drops lower during a pause. Over weed, shorten the pauses and control its fall. Beside the boat or bank, check how much time you can give it before it starts catching the vegetation.
Which Champion colours should I take on a pike trip?
For clear lakes and Swedish archipelagos, Holo Perch, Esox Lucius or Silver Holo are worth taking. Pack silver for Rügen, especially if you plan to fish where pike feed on herring. Add Fluo Tiger or Pink Candy for tea-coloured water, stirred-up bays and canals.
