The best pike lure colours for murky water – an angler’s practical guide

Why does pike lure colour matter?

Pike are predators that hunt mainly by sight. Visibility drops in murky water, so a well-chosen pike lure must stand out through colour, contrast and action. This is particularly important with hard lures and jerkbaits, which we often work aggressively to trigger an attack.

Which lure colours work in murky water?

Analyses of foreign sources and practical fishing experience highlight several proven colours:

  • Orange and fluorescent red – clearly visible in dirty water, provoking pike aggression.

  • White – excellent contrast against a dark background; works well for jerkbaits and crankbaits.

  • Gold and silver – a metallic flash that adds a light signal, especially effective on hard lures with a wide action.

  • Fire Tiger – the classic combination of green, yellow, orange and black stripes, a pattern that often saves a day’s fishing.

  • Black – in very murky water or at dawn and dusk, a black jerkbait creates a strong silhouette against the water.

Hard lure or soft plastic? What to choose in murky water

Many anglers choose soft plastics, but in murky water a hard lure – particularly a jerkbait – offers several advantages:

    1. Strong sideways action – pronounced swings improve visibility.

    2. The option of a stop&go retrieve – stopping the lure lets pike locate the target.

    3. Additional features – rattles, shiny foils and light reflections.

That is why it is worth packing at least a few hard jerkbaits, such as Venom Carrot UV, Venom Golden Zander, Gaspar Tail Bait Silver Holo.

How to retrieve a jerkbait in murky water?

    • Slow twitches – give the fish time to attack.

    • Aggressive jerks – make the lure produce flashes and strong vibrations.

    • Pauses in the retrieve – pike often attack when the hard lure stops and begins sinking slowly.

    Summary

The best colours for pike lures in murky water are fluorescent orange, white, gold and classic Fire Tiger. Particularly effective are hard lures of the jerkbait type, whose action and silhouette improve the chances of a strike.

If you fish murky water, keep a few brightly coloured jerkbaits in your box: it is the simplest way to improve effectiveness and provoke even a sluggish pike.
